Departmental Overview

The Department of Geology at Sri Pratap College has emerged as one of the leading centres for undergraduate education in Geology in the Kashmir Valley. Established to impart high-quality geological education, the department has consistently worked towards developing scientific knowledge, analytical skills, and field-based competence among students. Over the years, the department has built a strong academic foundation by integrating classroom teaching with laboratory experimentation and extensive geological fieldwork.

Situated in the geologically significant Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir, the department benefits from a unique natural setting that offers exceptional opportunities to study diverse geological formations, tectonic structures, glacial landscapes, mineral resources, and environmental processes. The department actively promotes the scientific understanding of Earth systems, natural resources, environmental dynamics, climate-related challenges, and geological hazards through both academic and practical approaches.

Emphasis is placed on experiential learning through field excursions, geological mapping, laboratory analysis, seminars, project work, and research-oriented activities that help students connect theoretical concepts with real-world geological phenomena. Through workshops, awareness programmes, and extension activities, the department encourages students to engage with contemporary environmental and geological issues affecting the Himalayan ecosystem and society at large.
